About me

Bellydance performance, Germany 2010

Since I was born dance has been an element of my life. I grew up in the artistic ambience of a bellydance studio in Germany, owned by my mother Yamuna, a popular bellydancer, where famous dance instructors came to teach and perform. At the age of three I gave my first solo performance on the occasion of a festival for women at Kulturzentrum Frankenhof (cultural center) in Germany. After attending ballet training from age four to eight, I gained experience in several dance styles and improved my technique and body knowledge with flamenco, jazz & african dance, yoga and contact improvisation. I began to teach at the age of 12, at first together with my mother (duets), then independently. From time to time regular performances at bellydance festivals in Germany became part of my life.

After attending a workshop of Raqia Hassan she invited me to join the 2002 Ahlan wa Sahlan Festival in Egypt, where I had the chance to perform with a live orchestra. In Cairo I participated in workshops held by Dina, Souhair Zaki and Mahmoud Reda, among others. After the oriental dance magazine Halima awarded me the 2006 Best Newcomer Award, I decided to follow my passion by acquiring a professional dance education. After four years of extensive training in classical ballet, contemporary & jazz dance, hip-hop, improvisation and acting, I received the Diploma for Stage Dance and Dance Education in July 2010 at the international Iwanson School of Contemporary Dance, in Munich.

After moving to Montréal in September 2010 to realize my dream of being a self-employed dancer, I attended a Bellydance Superstars audition in California to try my luck. One month later I went on tour with them as part of their popular Bombay Bellywood show in Japan. Since October 2011 I am part of the fusion dance group Ethereal Tribal in Montréal with which I went on tour to the Canadian Strongman Championship which took place in four different cities of New-Brunswick. In January 2012 a new experience waited for me - I accompanied the South American music group The Imbayakunas. We performed one month long for the Global Village Festival in Dubai! What an interesting journey... right now I am traveling a lot with The Bellydance Superstars and if I am not on the road I study and teach yoga and dance in Montréal.

About my dance

'I love to combine isolated, strong, feminine and impulsive movements with the variety of rhythms, the surprise of improvisation and the expression of emotions we have. I love to experiment with different types of music, to explore the language of my and others' dance and to work with people who share this gift with me.'
